In the Early Head Start program, we use various curriculums to meet the needs of our children and families.
The High/Scope curriculum is utilized in the center based and home based programs. In the High Scope approach to early childhood education, adults and children share control. The curriculum emphasizes active learning. The key principle of the High Scope approach is that children learn through play. The curriculum encourages both children and adults to initiate learning experiences. Through planning adults provide activities and generate strategies to challenge children's emerging abilities and to pursue their own interest. It helps adults to focus on developmental principles that encourage them to build on children's existing strengths and accomplishments. Developmentally appropriate activities are planned around key experiences. When we accept that learning comes from within, we achieve a critical balance in educating young children. The adult's role is to support and guide young children through their active learning adventures and experiences.
